I downloaded a year’s worth of tournament chess games to analyze piece positions (full write-up of how here). The first question I had is, for a random game, at a random point in the game, what is the probability that any given piece is on a particular square of the board?

There’s lots to explore, but one of the first things that jumped out to me was the asymmetry between king and queen sides. What do you see?

Heat maps of probability distributions for each piece location.
